Introduction: Misoprostol is available and widely used in obsterical practice in Vietnam, and it is controversial on effects of the drug, especially in preventing postpartum hemorrhage.
Objective: This study was to investigate the effectivenes of the drug use right after fetal delivery for preventing postpartum hemorrhage.
Method: The nested case-control design was used with the size of 73 pregnant women, who delivered vaginally in the University Medical Center of Ho Chi Minh City, during 2 years, from January, 2003 to December, 2004.
Result: The risk of postpartum hemorrhage was higher in group using misoprostol than non-misoprostol group (OR= 7.06; 95% C.I.= 1.67-29.78).
Conclusion: misoprostol should not be recommended as an effective remedy to establish a preventing strategy for postpartum hemorrhage.
